About Us

Culturally competent, inclusive childcare services

Kuumba Childcare Co-operative Inc., is a new innovative childcare service within a community of co-operatives that aims to provide access to culturally competent, inclusive childcare services for children from birth to 6 years old and their families, in the Region of Durham.

This workers’ co-operative childcare service values individual lived experiences and understands the importance of cultural representation; strong academic foundations; positive social emotional learning and their lifelong impacts, which cultivate a strong sense of self-expression and belonging.

Through a holistic African and Caribbean cultural approach, with an innovative use of today’s technologies, we are building a childcare service that offers an inclusive, safe space for learning; setting a strong foundation and culturally reframing the thinking of young children within our community during their formative years.

Our Mission

Kuumba’s mission is to support children and families by providing a safe environment for all children by cultivating self-expression, a sense of belonging and engagement through a holistic African and Caribbean cultural approach to learning.

Our Vision

Kuumba Childcare Co-operative is a worker co-op that strives to set the foundation for positive lifelong learning for all children inspired by African and Caribbean cultural experiences to provide innovative childcare for all families.

Our Story

Kuumba Childcare Co-operative Inc. is based on the worker co-operative model; a co-op owned and operated by its members. This company was founded by a group of empowered African-Caribbean women who saw the need for culturally relevant childcare, seized the opportunity to create employment and establish ownership for the progress of our community.

In the Fall of 2018, the Women’s Multicultural Resource and Counselling Centre (WMRCC) in Durham received an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant for worker Co-operatives to provide training for women interested in starting a business. A member of the Kuumba Childcare Co-operative Inc. team attended this training and shared the information with a group that would become the founding members. These dedicated members worked collaboratively, energetically and enthusiastically to achieve incorporation in December 2019.

The work is not over yet, and we look forward to community outreach, education and support to continue to see the mission and vision of Kuumba Childcare Co-operative Inc. achieved.
